Temperature affects fiber stability, dimensional behavior, finishes, seals, and expected service life. Moisture, condensation, hydrolysis, oxidation, acids, alkalis, solvents, and other chemicals can also change the suitability of a filter material.

Useful identification details include the overall length, outside and inside diameter, media type, micron rating, flow direction, core and cage construction, end-cap configuration, connector style, gasket material, and any visible labels or part numbers.
