Dust Filter Bag Premature Failure: Operating Data Checklist
Premature filter bag failure rarely has one universal cause. Before selecting a replacement material or changing cleaning settings, collect evidence from the failed bags, cages and operating records.
1. Record the failure pattern
Note whether the damage is concentrated at the top, bottom, inlet side, seams or cage-contact lines. Photograph representative bags and mark their positions in the dust collector. A repeatable location pattern can help identify mechanical, flow-distribution or installation issues.
2. Check temperature and moisture
Compare normal temperature, start-up and shutdown conditions, short temperature peaks and dew-point risk with the filter-media limits. Condensation can combine with dust or gas components and change both chemical exposure and cleaning behavior.
3. Review gas and dust chemistry
Provide the gas composition, acid or alkali components, oxygen level, dust particle size, abrasiveness and moisture. Material selection should reflect the complete operating environment rather than temperature alone.
4. Review pulse-cleaning conditions
Record cleaning pressure, pulse duration, frequency, differential-pressure set points and any recent changes. Cleaning that is too weak can allow excessive dust buildup, while aggressive settings can increase mechanical stress. Settings should be reviewed with the dust collector design and operating data.
5. Inspect cages and dimensional fit
Check cage diameter, length, wire condition, welds, corrosion and alignment. Verify the bag length, diameter, top construction and tube-sheet hole dimensions. Burrs, damaged cages or incorrect clearance can cause repeated abrasion even after new bags are installed.
6. Examine seams and construction
Inspect sewing lines, thread condition, bottom construction and top attachment. Separate manufacturing defects from damage caused during transport, installation or operation by comparing unused samples with failed bags when available.
7. Prepare data for replacement review
Include bag and cage drawings, photos, operating temperature range, gas and dust information, airflow and differential-pressure trends, cleaning settings, service time and the quantity required. This information supports material and construction recommendations for the actual project.
Do not assign a fixed service life or guaranteed result without reviewing the operating conditions. Corrective action should address the measured cause, not only replace the damaged bags.
