Dust Filter Bags for Steel Plants: Operating-Condition Checklist

Collect process, temperature, spark, dust and cleaning data before selecting filter media

Dust Filter Bags for Steel Plants: Operating-Condition Checklist

Steel-plant dust collection conditions vary between raw-material handling, sintering, furnaces, casting, finishing and secondary fume systems. Filter media should be selected from measured process data rather than a single industry label.

1. Identify the collection point
Record the process source, normal and peak airflow, inlet dust concentration, expected particle size and whether the system handles primary gas, secondary fume or transfer-point dust.

2. Record temperature and spark exposure
Provide normal temperature, short peaks, start-up and shutdown conditions, and the possibility of hot particles or sparks. Upstream cooling, spark arresting and gas conditioning should be considered separately from the filter-media rating.

3. Characterize the dust
Check abrasiveness, particle size, bulk density, moisture, oil content and tendency to agglomerate. Abrasive dust and localized inlet velocity can affect bag wear and gas-distribution requirements.

4. Review gas chemistry and moisture
Provide oxygen, acid or alkali components, humidity and dew-point conditions. Condensation can combine with dust or gas components and change both chemical exposure and cake release.

5. Confirm cleaning and mechanical compatibility
Record the cleaning method and settings, differential-pressure range, cage dimensions, tube-sheet hole size, bag length and top and bottom construction. Replacement bags must match the existing collector and installation method.

6. Define acceptance and documentation
State the required project standard, testing or certificates, dimensional tolerances, inspection plan, quantity and delivery requirements. Emission performance depends on the complete system and operating condition, not the filter bag alone.

Use the collected data to compare suitable media, surface treatments and constructions for the specific steel-plant application. Do not apply fixed airflow or emission figures from another installation.
